We're making HUGE strides with LITTLE steps!

It's Teen Talk Tuesday!

Teen Talk Tuesday is when I share tips to help spark meaningful conversations or otherwise engage with tweens, preteens and teens. I like to think these are little nuggets of wisdom gained from years of working with young people, as well as raising my own teenager...and, well, remembering what it was like to be an adolescent myself.

As we "mature" in age and go through the process of day-to-day living, we adults often forget what it was like to be a teen, how misunderstood and frustrated we often felt, how frustrated our own parents would get, and how distant or disconnected we'd feel from our families.

...we can be so consumed with focusing on the BIG stuff...we forget that sometimes, it's the little things.

Now that we're on the other side, as the adults, we try so hard to bridge the distance with our own youth. And there are times when we can be so consumed with focusing on the BIG stuff - you know, the ones that are just blatant in your family, staring you in the face, and may even be elephants in the room no one wants to mention but are so obviously standing there, e.g. COVID-19 and your kids' current schooling situation, the amount of time they spend on their phones, the "tea" regarding their romantic interests, or even the upcoming election - that we forget that sometimes, it's the little things that mean the most.

So, for this Teen Talk Tuesday, we're making HUGE strides with LITTLE steps. Today's step is giving a Super Snack Surprise:

  • Make, or in some way provide, your child's favorite snack.

Don't tell them, just do it; Super Snack Surprise them with your spontaneity! And don't look for a reason; just do it cause you love them!

They're not told often enough or shown often enough that they rock and are appreciated just because they are!

Our kids are amazing, even when they're amazingly challenging to understand LOL, and they deserve to know!

Especially tweens, preteens, and teens. They're not told often enough or shown often enough that they rock and are appreciated just because they are! So, when you bless them with their Super Snack Surprise and they look at you with shock or disbelief, or even wariness 😆, and ask you what it's for - go ahead and tell them: "Just 'cause you ROCK and I appreciate your very life!"

Did you try this tip? If so, what was the snack and was your teen Super-Snack-Surprised? What other "little" things do you do to break, or keep, down barriers between you and your youth? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Let's start a discourse!
