Is it just online/virtual Algebra tutoring? Do you offer in-person Algebra tutoring? As a private online/virtual algebra tutor, I only offer algebra tutoring online. This approach is similar to face-to-face tutoring, but with a screen and online whiteboard. As a virtual algebra tutor, sessions are easier to schedule, can be done in the comfort of the student's own home, can be done ANYWHERE the student has an hour and access to an internet connection (like at school during free periods or on vacation), allows for recording of lessons so the student can revisit it later, allows for easier access to a wider variety of resources during the tutoring session, and allows YOU a wider pool from which to find the Algebra tutor that best fits your and your student's needs.

How does an online/virtual Algebra tutoring session work?Online/Virtual Algebra tutoring is just like an in-person tutoring session, except for the two computers. First, you'll pay for the session through PayPal. I will then share a link or ID for a completely free online whiteboard or video conferencing app, either Zoom or Bitpaper or both. This link or ID will be what you use each time we log on with each other. For Zoom, you’ll need to either download it or allow the app to open when prompted. We'll both login from our personal computers/devices and make sure we can hear and see each other. A whiteboard will be available on the screen and you and I both will be able to write on it. During video conferencing, I’ll be able to share my screen so you or your child will literally be able to see what I see when necessary, just like if we were sitting right next to each other looking at a problem together. We'll go over concepts, maybe some work similar to that from a textbook or handout that has been scanned in or emailed in advance (a picture can even be taken and sent). I’ll also be able to record lessons or save notes so the student can revisit the lesson at a later time if necessary. It's really a very simple and interactive experience.

How can you see the problems from the textbook/worksheet that I (or my child) may be using? If I need to see specific problems, you'll take a picture and send it to me before the lesson. I'll then be able to go over similar and related problems that I can pull up from the many resources that I already have or that are available online.

What equipment do I need for online/virtual Algebra tutoring? For the best possible interaction, you will need a computer equipped with a webcam, microphone, speakers, and reliable internet connection. You can use your mouse to write on the online whiteboard, but I highly recommend investing in a digital pad with a pen/stylus. My opinion and experience is that it is easier to write with a pen/stylus than writing with a mouse, and it's more comfortable. One relatively inexpensive but effective option is the XP-PEN Star03. Also, if you have an iPad and stylus, or other tablet with drawing capabilties, you can use that with a USB input or by simply accessing our whiteboard session through said tablet.

Will I get to work with you?Yes, the benefit of choosing a private Algebra tutor, including one that is an online/virtual Algebra tutor, namely me ;-), is that you will get to work with me directly.

How long are your online/virtual Algebra tutoring sessions?Typical tutoring sessions last 55-60 minutes.

How long will my child need tutoring? This answer varies based on a couple of factors: 1. Learning speed 2. Learning disabilities 3. Consistency Learning speed Most students that need tutoring benefit from one-on-one instruction. The school is based on a certain curriculum vs. the needs of each individual child. With one-on-one tutoring, a student can get the exact help that they need at the right time. This allows growth to happen quickly. However, every child is different, and some students just need more time interacting with the content than others. Learning disabilities If your child has been diagnosed with a learning disability, it will take more time than other students. This is because it takes longer for things to go from their short term memory to their long term memory. In these cases, your child will definitely need and benefit from more time interacting with the content. Consistency Sometimes, life gets in the way of students being able to show up for their tutoring sessions, even if it's online. If students miss too many sessions, then it becomes harder to close the gap. The more consistent we both are, the better results your child gets.

Do you offer summer tutoring?Yes, I offer summer tutoring. I work all year long with the occasional holiday break here and there. Summer is the time of year where kids will suffer from the dreaded 'summer slide,' if they are not consistently engaged with the content, especially when it comes to math. While summer is primetime for vacations, trips to the beach or adventure parks, family barbecues and reunions, bike-riding and neighborhood games of tag, or just relaxing and taking it easy, it is super important to me that my students do NOT miss out on this opportune time to continue closing the gap or get a headstart in math for the following school year. This is why I fully support and work hard to create a strong but manageable summer tutoring program.

What are your Algebra tutoring rates?Tutoring rates are on a monthly basis: 1 hr/week = $325/month 2 hr/week = $520/month You could decide to use a tutoring center instead. However, most tutoring centers employ a lot of tutors, so your student may not always get the same tutor for every session. And then many times the tutor is not someone who specializes in or has taught math before. That means you would be spending your hard-earned money for inconsistency, questionable quality, and results that may take two to three times longer to achieve. However, when you work with me, you pay for one tutor, who will always be your student's tutor, is an experienced and qualified math teacher, and will help your student learn quickly and close the gap more effectively. Wouldn't you like the personal touch a private tutor can give? Additionally, my services also include: Individualized and responsive weekly lessons geared toward your child’s specific needs and goals. I am available via email and text to support my students, within reason of course. For me learning is not just contained within the session, I assign homework, reasonably of course. Monthly access to any paid supplemental subscriptions that ends up being required for additional practice. Focused integration and communication with your child's teacher to gain access to materials and stay up to date on their progress. Automatic processing of payments, monthly basis, hassle-free. Students experience results immediately, whether it's a raise in their confidence level, better understanding, higher scores

How do I pay for online/virtual Algebra tutoring? When you sign up for online tutoring, you will be paying with PayPal or Stripe. If you don't have PayPal yet, you will need to sign up, which is a simple and easy process. You'll need a credit/debit card to link to your PayPal account. You do not need to sign up for Stripe. When we set up for the first session, you can choose to receive the PayPal link to set payments up yourself or we can set them up with Stripe together over the phone. Either way is really easy.

What happens if I miss or need to cancel a tutoring session? If you need to cancel a session, please email me as soon as possible, at least 24 hours before the tutoring session. Then, we can reschedule the session accordingly rather than cancelling it. If your notice falls within that 24 hours before or you completely miss a session without ANY prior notification, you will be charged for the entire session without opportunity to reschedule. I must do this because I have many clients looking for open time.

What are your qualifications?I have a B.S. in Mathematics from Spelman College and extensive graduate-level pedagogical coursework from SUNY Empire State College and Western Governors University, including that pertaining to child & adolescent development, secondary math instruction, and teaching students with special needs. Most importantly, I have been working with young people for over 20 years in mentoring, tutoring, and teaching capacities, including 6 years as a high school classroom math teacher. I have been blessed to help countless students overcome their challenges with math and get to a place where they could persevere through a variety of problems and finally achieve success in their math class, from understanding the material to making incredible gains on their End-of-Course state exams. My students tell me I'm able to help them be calm so they can focus more on learning, and less on performing. They love the way I break the concepts and material down for them so that they truly understand. Teaching and tutoring is my passion. Feel free to read more about my background and story on my About Me page.
