9/15/2020 - National Online Learning Day

Is remote/hybrid-learning, whatever your student is doing, in the 2020-21 school year challenging? Is your child's school still trying to figure things out? Are their teachers still trying to figure things out? What about YOU?? Are you, the parent, still trying to figure things out?? I bet the answer to all of these is a very loud YES!!! And you know what? You know who is also still trying to figure things out??? Yep...you guessed it...your kids!!! They're still trying to figure things out too...
They miss things being the way they used to be...only to enter the new school year with similar conditions and uncertainty...
They miss things being the way they used to be: regular, everyday school shenanigans; seeing and greeting their friends or classmates in the hall; hugs and high-fives with their teachers; learning in physical desks; etc. After several months of remote-learning at the end of one school year, only to enter the new school year with similar conditions and uncertainty, they may have expectations that weren't met and may be dealing with lots of disappointments.
So, for this Teen Talk Tuesday, check in with your child:
Let them know you understand their frustration.
Consider researching the merits of online learning together (they DO exist) and help them to embrace said merits.
Every obstacle has a silver lining - continue to guide them to recognize and share those silver linings and overcome the challenges!
Is your family participating in fully-remote learning or a hybrid model this semester? How is it going? How are you helping your teens cope with or otherwise navigate this unusual time and way of schooling? Share your thoughts in the comments below! Let's start a discourse!
